Ananada Sutra ch 3-10
3-10 VADHA SA YOUSAMANA SHAKTIH SEVYAM STHAPAYATI LAKSYE.
vadha: obstacle, sa: she, that; yusamana: helping; shaktih: force; sevyam: one who deserves to be served; sthapayati: establishes; laksye: in the target or goal (7th case ending);
translation: An obstacle is that helping force that establishes one in the target. In this translation, you can see where the explanation of "SEVYAM"? When you put "SEVYAM" in a translated sentence. Do you understand the whole verse? The book "A Commentary on Ananda Sutram" by Ananda Mitra. First Edition in the year 1998. Rudranii has the first Edition of the translation of the book "Ananda Sutra". Published in March 1967. Translated by: Manohar Gupta from Bengali original Published by Ajayananda Avdhuta Publication Secretary. Let me go to the content. On the purport: Obstacles in fact are no foes in the path of Sadhana (spiritual practice), but indeed friends. They only do service to men. It is on account of these obstacles that the battle rages against them and this countering effort alone reaches the Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) to his cherished goal. Unfortunately, there is no word-by-word translation, it's ok even from Bengali.
Rudranii has other translation books for "Ananda Sutra". First Edition and Second Edition. First Edition in 1967. The 2nd Edition was in 1996. From original book was written in Bengali. Originally published in Bengali, published in 1962 Central Office. First Edition translated from the original Bengali by Shrii Manohar Gupta. The second Edition edited by Vijayananda, Ananda Rucira, Acyutananda, Shrii Jayanta Kumar. The 3rd Edition was published in 2004. The 2nd Edition is better. There are the purported part and word-by-word translation part. See the difference is here, all others remain the same, only the word "sevyam" means one who will serve.;
Now, do you understand this passage? VADHA SA YOUSAMANA SHAKTIH SEVYAM STHAPAYATI LAKSYE. or VADHA SA YOUSAMANA SHAKTIH STHAPAYATI LAKSYE. It looks like those two sentences are the same, (according to the translation). BaBa put the word "sevyam" inside the sentence. Why? That's the reason why i like to read and memorize the sutra all these years. My thoughts go along with him back to the time BaBa wrote the sutra. Remember after Shiva 64 tantra sutras, this is only one, only tantra sutra book after 7,000 years. Aya! goes out my thought. Bengali translation didn't translate the word "sevyam". Why didn't Shrii Manoha Gupta translate the word "sevyam" from Bengali into English in the original version? When i read this version, i tried to find a translation in English in a simple and proper way. I found out it's not easy to use simple wording to express what BaBa wanted us to know from this verse, although the meaning is so easy, so simple. And everyone uses it in their daily life. Like, God helps those who help themselves. Vadha helps the people who help themselves along the way to their success.
Ananda Mitra's Book "A Commentary on Ananda Sutram" first edition published in 1981, and a second edition in 1998. Rudranii has the first edition. i'm using the 1998 version. In the 1981 version, Ananda Mitra explained the word "sevyam" means "one confronted"; 1998 version, the word "sevyam" means "one who deserves to be served"; (which one is right?) The whole sentence is translated as "An obstacle is that helping force which establishes the one confronted by it in the target." (too far-fetched) "sevyam" with the ending letter "m", a gerundive word, carries its meaning. Ananda Mitra must look up "sevyam" from a Sanskrit dictionary. She got the meaning as "one confronted".
